My mother was a child in Shanghai at the beginning of the Cultural Revolution. At that time, there were very limited possibilities of entertainment - few books to read, no toys and of course no TV or music except for a few selected songs. Therefore, she played many card games with the neighbors’ children, including the 24 Game. Having reached fourth grade, she had become so good at the 24 Game, she could beat all her opponents.
I started playing with my mother when I was in third grade. We played after dinner, we played in the car during long trips and we played in the hotel rooms. The game enhanced my mental arithmetic skills, which have helped me a lot in school. Now I am studying computer science and still enjoy playing the 24 Game with my friends and my mother, particularly because I sometimes can win against her.
